A record-breaking chill descended on several cities in Los Angeles and Orange counties on Wednesday, Dec. 29.
Anaheim reached a high temperature of only 56 degrees on Wednesday, three degrees lower than its previous record from 2002 on the same day, according to the National Weather Service.
Newport Beach, which saw the mercury top out at only 55 degrees, tied its record for the date, set in 2007.
In Los Angeles County, Woodland Hills also tied its record low for a high temperature of 49 degrees, from 1987. LAX Airport broke its record registering a maximum temperature of 53 degrees, two degrees lower than the previous record from 2012.
The University of California Los Angeles, located in Westwood, registered 51 degrees, breaking the previous record of 54 degrees in 1991.
Temperatures are usually in the 60s this time of year, but many places away from the mountains were in the 50s and upper 40s.
Forecasters expect slightly warmer daytimes conditions over the weekend and into next week, but believe temperatures will stay below the seasonal average.
