The Lakers canceled practice Tuesday after shooting guard Talen Horton-Tucker entered into the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols, according to the team.

Other members of the Lakers were directed to take two tests – a rapid and a PCR – before boarding for their flight to Dallas in the afternoon, if they return negative results, per ESPN. The Lakers are scheduled to face the Mavericks at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the first of a three-game road trip.

Since returning from a thumb injury that delayed the start to his season, Horton-Tucker, a 21-year-old in his third season, has started 12 of his 15 games this season and is averaging 11.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.3 steals in 28.8 minutes per game.

Tuesday’s canceled practice is the first known this season for the Lakers, though the team did deal with the protocols when LeBron James experienced a short stint away from the team after a positive test result. When further testing yielded negative results multiple times, he was permitted to return to action.

League-wide, outbreaks and positive cases are on the rise. On Monday, the Chicago Bulls announced two games had been postponed, and their next game against the Lakers on Sunday appeared it might be jeopardy even before L.A. called off practice, with the NBA pushing back the start time to 5 p.m. from 12:30 p.m.

Before the season, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said that the team was expected to be 100% vaccinated on opening night.

More to come on this story.
